First Night Home & Visit to the Pediatrician

Your first night home you slept like a champ: going to sleep @ 10:30 pm and then waking @ 2:30 pm and then @ 6:00 am. We were very excited! SPL woke up @ 7 am and came into our room for our regular routine of cuddling and reading a story, but this time, he was even more excited because you would be part of the routine! He arranged it so that you were in the middle and he was on one side and I was on the other. We read Geronimo Stilton aloud (his new favorite chapter book series). When I read aloud, I often stop to ask SPL what he thinks a word means and this time, after I did that, he turned to you and said,“She’ll do this to you too :-)” and we both laughed.
Friday 6/15 we had your first pediatrician appointment. We are watching your weight as you’d gone from 8 lbs 13 oz at birth to 8 lbs 4 oz 2 days later @ discharge from the hospital The doctor said you were 8 lbs 1 oz on Friday so still not down the 10% which is their target level. Your brother came with us to the pediatrician’s too and was very helpful, getting the door and helping me keep track of your stuff.
The doctor looked at your dimple on your lower back – your brother has one too – and decided it was untethered so no worries (what a relief!). She checked out your legs, hips, eyes, reflexes – all strong and responsive. SPL loved being a part of this process too.
You had jaundice still though so the doctor sent us to get your blood drawn at the local hospital. On our way there, I realized that SPL and I were super hungry so we stopped off at the gas station (we were also out of gas – oops!). Then I realized that SPL hadn’t had lunch – another oops! Unfortunately there weren’t many healthy choices @ the Shell station (which suited SPL just fine ;-).
We finally made it to get your blood drawn. It’s normal for newborns who are 3-6 days old to have elevated bilirubin counts but then after day 5-6, it decreases. If we don’t see a decrease by Sunday June 17 (Father’s Day!), then you will need to have light therapy (not a big deal but we will need to go to the hospital).
I realized how out of it I still am while driving you and SPL around. What was to be a 1 hour trip morphed into a 3 hour trip and at 3 days post-partum, that’s a super long time to be out and about. Thankfully SPL was with me and super supportive the entire time, even when I got a bit grumpy.
