Tough week for sleep.  4 days of cat naps punctuated by today’s outstanding, but hard fought, 2 naps. When you sleep, your arms lie wide open, sprawled above your head (now that we are trying the unswaddled arms). Once awake, your eyes are bright, sometimes in a flirty look, sometimes in a meltdown.  Often you look curiously up and around the room, searching for interesting things. Colors?  Today it seemed like you were finding the reds or shades of red.  Shapes?  maybe contrast?

In the early weeks, you had only 2 moods: sleepy and frantic.  Now there are nuanced emotions, at least as nuanced as a 13 week old can get.  You smile, giggle, mimic, flirt a bit even.  You light up when your brother or your dad play with you.

The rolls of your thighs are what I hoped for but I am finding them challenging to care for.  Often there is a fold under the roll that I didn’t see – especially around your neck, which is non-existent as your head sits squarely on your shoulders.

Your motions are getting more predictable and less jerky.  The Moro reflex is fading into yesterday, replaced by the command of hand to mouth movements.  You love your fists and suck on them with vigor.

The last 2 weeks (11 and 12) have been full of unexpected spit up fountains.  They’ve dribbled down dad’s shirt, down my arm, and onto the floor.  I think only your brother has been spared.  We’ve discovered that spit up on the wood floor makes it extra slippery – something that SPL has taken advantage of while sock-footed.

You are at your most charming on the changing table these days.  Maybe it’s the captive audience.  Maybe it’s the joy of having a clean bottom.  Maybe it’s that you have a clear view of the ceiling fan?  Who knows?  You will talk and mimic and laugh when I try to repeat your sounds.  It is a joyful time.
